CPA Dennis Young of Los Altos Receives Public Service Award
LOS ALTOS, Calif. -- For his services to Los Altos-area organizations, the California Society of CPAs has presented Dennis Young, CPA, with its Public Service Award for 2008.
The award recognizes Young’s quarter of a century of service to community organizations and adds to a long list of honors, which includes the 1994 Los Altos Chamber of Commerce Business Leader of the Year Award and the 2007 Housing Industry Foundation Summit Award for efforts to prevent homelessness in the Bay Area.
CalCPA annually presents the PSA to one of its members with a record of commitment to public service through participation in charitable, governmental or volunteer work that significantly affects the community, state or nation.
In a letter of support to the PSA selection committee, Roy Lave, executive director of the Los Altos Community Foundation, said that Young’s “willingness to share his tax and accounting knowledge and his ongoing participation as a contributing member of our board has been immensely important to our success.”
Young is a founder of the Foundation and has served as its board treasurer since its organization in 1991. He recently became the Foundation’s corporate secretary.
Young also is a board member of the Housing Industry Foundation, which he joined in 1989 and is a past president of that organization. Recently he developed an investment policy for that organization that allowed it to maximize return on funds.
Other community groups that Young has been involved with in various capacities include the Rotary Club of Los Altos, the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce, the Los Altos Festival of Lights Parade (he has been the parade’s Santa Claus since 1992), the Foothill-DeAnza Colleges Foundation, and Santa Clara University’s School of Business Accounting Department Advisory Board.
Young also has served CalCPA in numerous capacities. He has been a vice chair of the statewide association and president of CalCPA’s Peninsula Chapter and has served on numerous committees. He is a past president of the California CPA Education Foundation and has been on the National Council of the American Institute of CPAs. He is a partner in the firm of RSM McGladrey Inc. and McGladrey & Pullen LLP, Mountain View.
Nancy Chandler, CPA and chair of the PSA selection committee, said Young clearly is a model for other members of the accounting profession. “Dennis demonstrates that accountants are a vital force within the community. His knowledge and expertise have helped the civic organizations he has worked with to prosper and to make Los Altos a better place in which to live.”
